Exciting cargo ship voyage to Spain, Portugal and Morocco

Varied round trip in the Mediterranean Sea from Barcelona to Morocco and around the Iberian Peninsula with many ports!

In Leixoes, the market hall and the center with its stores and cafes are within easy walking distance. Regardless of which terminal the ship is at, either the northern part with its beaches or the southern part of the city is easily accessible.

The port of Leixoes is fascinating - the largest container terminal is located at the back of the port, unlike most other ports, so the ship must first pass through a long port channel and bascule bridge.

Even from a distance, the world's largest mosque can be seen on the shore of the "white city" of Casablanca. A stroll through the winding old town conveys pure Orient.
Casablanca and Tangier are sometimes visited twice.

Freighter round trip

My Cargo trip

My cabin on the ship was really comfortable and cosy. The berth was a large single with, for me, a good mattress and with the slow rocking of the ship, I slept like a baby. The interior spaces were well air-conditioned and kept at a very comfortable 22 degrees. There was a good sized shower and seemingly endless hot water. Meals were taken in the officer's mess, a smallish room with 2 tables: one for the captain and me, and one for the other 4 officers. The kitchen separated the officer's mess from the crew's mess where the 8 Filipino crew would take their meals. Nothing for me on the ship was off limits, except the engine spaces (though I got a comprehensive tour of those by the second officer) and crew cabins. I spent many hours exploring the 400+ foot ship from the very tip of the bow, watching the great steel bulb push through the sea, to the stern, rumbling away with the engine and ventilator fans while mesmerised by the arrow straight wake leading back to our last port.

For someone new to the experience of freighter cruising, I could offer these pieces of advice:

1) You have to be completely flexible in terms of timing. For this 3 week voyage I had allotted 5 weeks, and I made my return connection with only15 minutes to spare! Do buy completely changeable travel tickets and fully refundable accommodations. If you are offered cancellation insurance for something, take it. Or else, be comfortable with losing what you have pre-paid or with finding flights and hotels as you go along. Nothing, and I really mean NOTHING is certain until you are tied up alongside the pier.

2) If you are fussy about what and when you eat do not take a freighter voyage.  I found the food to be ok and filling, and while it varies from ship to ship, it isn't restaurant quality. Meal times were suited to the watch system used on board, and took some time to get used to but were pleasant moments to share, non the less.

3) Bring your own shampoo (and whatever else you may want) and a decent bath towel. It will just add a little luxury that you WILL appreciate.

4) Smile. This is a small community and its a given that everyone needs to work at being pleasant. Every time I passed a crew member I was greeted by a smile and hello sir. The crew (officers and ratings) routinely wish each other "good appetite" when they pass each other at meal times. Please and thank-you to everyone is a rule that all 13 crew members observed without fail.

5) Don't expect any personal attention. The crew are working 8 hour watches 7 days a week, and that's what they are paid to do. However, I had hours of interesting conversation with the Russian captain about all kinds of topics (EXCEPT politics and religion) both at meal times and while I passed time on the bridge during his watch. But I had a kindle and read 4 novels, watched plenty of downloaded netfilix offerings and stared endlessly at the beautiful sea. You are, in the end, your own entertainment.
