The "Transcantábrico Gran Lujo" train-hotel stands for comfort, glamour, gastronomy, culture, relaxation and fun. The Transcantábrico route is a journey on one of the most beautiful luxury trains in the world. The route passes through impressive landscapes and the most representative cities of the different regions it crosses.

The Transcantábrico Gran Lujo was founded in 1983 under the name Transcantábrico and will celebrate its 41st anniversary in 2024. Celebrate its 41st anniversary. Its route has always run along the Cantabrian coast in northern Spain. In 2011, it was converted into a luxury hotel train and renamed "Transcantábrico Gran Lujo". In 2014, it received the award for "most luxurious train in the world".

A journey on rails that takes you back to the beginning of the last century, as it resembles the classic luxury trains of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which were characterised by their elegance and glamour. They were characterised by their elegance and glamour. Originally, the train consisted of three Pullman saloon carriages built in Great Britain in 1923 (pub, bar and lounge), which today are the saloon carriages of the Transcantábrico Gran Lujo, renovated, furnished and decorated in Belle Époque style, authentic jewels of the historic railway heritage.

The train currently consists of 4 saloon cars, 7 sleeping cars, a kitchen car, a generator car and a service car for the staff.
The maximum capacity of the train is 28 passengers.

All carriages and lounges are connected internally so that passengers can move around freely.
The train's lounges are luxurious spaces created to enjoy the scenery of the route from the best seat on the train in the panoramic glass lounge, have a drink, lunch or simply indulge in the relaxed atmosphere during the journey.
In the restaurant carriages of the Transcantábrico Gran Lujo you will find the perfect atmosphere for an à la carte breakfast or a delicious lunch or dinner, a gastronomic experience with influences from northern Spanish and international cuisine.
The bar trolley service offers its guests teas, coffees and a variety of drinks with or without alcohol from morning until the early hours of the morning, which they can enjoy in the lounges or in the comfort of their suite, with a 24-hour service.
In the evening, guests can enjoy live music, cultural activities and gastronomic experiences prepared by the chef.


The rooms

The 14 suites of the "Transcantábrico Gran Lujo" are 5-star hotel suites on rails, designed for the relaxation and privacy of its customers. They are spacious and equipped with wooden furniture and panelling, a lounge-style seating area, a large bedroom, a private bathroom and classic period details. They offer personalised service and comfort for you to enjoy during your trip.

The deluxe suites have a double bed, a living room with a sofa that converts into a bed, large windows and a magnificent private bathroom with hydro-massage shower/steam sauna, hairdryer and a varied welcome gifts.

The spacious rooms offer either a comfortable double bed (1.50 m x 2.00 m) or two single beds (0.80 m x 2.00 m), a wardrobe, a luggage rack, a desk, a safe and a minibar as well as technology: LED TV screens, music system, computer with free internet connection, air conditioning and telephone.

Travel plan

Day 1: San Sebastián - Carranza
Meeting point is the Barcelo-Costa Vasca Hotel in San Sebastián at 13:00. City tour and lunch, then our luxury coach takes us to Bilbao, where El Transcantábrico awaits us. Reception and comfort. Dinner on board and overnight stay in Carranza.

Day 2: Carranza - Bilbao - Santander
As every day, we start the morning with a delicious breakfast while the train takes us to Bilbao, where we visit the city and the Guggenheim Museum, lunch on board while we arrive in Santander. Sightseeing and dinner. Overnight stay in Santander.

Day 3: Santander - Cabezón de la Sal
Drive to Unquera to visit the Hermida Gorge and Potes. Lunch, in the afternoon visit to Comillas. Dinner and overnight stay in Cabezón de la Sal.

Day 4: Cabezón de la Sal - Llanes
Visit to Santillana del Mar and the neo-cave of Altamira, lunch, in the afternoon we drive to Llanes in Asturias. Dinner and overnight stay in Llanes.

Day 5: Llanes - Oviedo
After breakfast we travel by coach to the heart of Asturias, to the Picos de Europa National Park, to the Covadonga Lakes and to Cangas de Onis.Afternoon Oviedo, sightseeing, dinner and overnight stay in Oviedo.

Day 6: Oviedo - Luarca
Visit to Gijon and lunch, afternoon arrival in Luarca, La Villa Blanca de la Costa Verde. Dinner and overnight stay in Luarca.

Day 7: Luarca - Viveiro
After breakfast we arrive in Ribadeo and drive along the coast to the beach of Las Catedrales. In the afternoon we take the train to Viveiro, sightseeing, dinner and overnight stay in Viveiro.

Day 8: Viveiro - Santiago de Compostela
After the last breakfast on board, we arrive in Ferrol, where the Transcantábrico bus is waiting to take us to Santiago de Compostela. Sightseeing, end of the journey at the Parador de los Reyes Católicos at around 13:00.


The major cities on the Transcantábrico route through northern Spain

San Sebastián (Basque Country)
A stately city of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Famous for its beach "La Concha", one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, San Sebastián is of course known for its exquisite gastronomy with some of the best restaurants in the world.
The old town is home to some of San Sebastian's most impressive historical buildings, such as the church of San Vicente and the "Plaza de la Constitución". Other attractions include the Miramar Palace, the San Telmo Museum and Mount Igueldo, which offers spectacular views over the city.

Bilbao
Located in the Basque Country, Bilbao is a dynamic and modern city with a long history and an important cultural heritage. The price for the 8-day trip on the "Transcantabrico Gran Lujo" hotel-train in the Gran Lujo suite (1.50m x 2m double bed or 0.85 x 2m twin beds) is EUR 8,900 per person, EUR 15,400 for single occupancy, all inclusive.
 

  • Accommodation in a deluxe suite on the Transcantábrico train with a 150 cm x 200 cm double bed (or separate 85 cm x 200 cm beds), sofa and private bathroom.
  •  All of the train's lounges are open 24 hours a day.
  •  It is possible for the staff to collect your luggage.

Those who belong to the European Union should find out about the agreements with each country (in general there is reciprocity), as well as the agreements with other countries. In any case, it is highly advisable for citizens of other nationalities with whom there are no agreements or treaties to take out health insurance.

The trains have been remodelled and equipped with the latest technology, but as they are historic trains, their interiors are not suitable for wheelchairs or walking aids. People with reduced mobility can travel with a certain degree of independence, although it is always advisable that they are accompanied to assist them if necessary. Upon prior request, a wheelchair will be made available to the traveller. It is very important that the disabled traveller is accompanied by a person who can assist them on all journeys, as there is no staff on board or on the ground for this type of service.
 


Public Wi-Fi is available on all trains, the "Transcantábrico", "Costa Verde Express" and "Al Ándalus".
 


The cancellation fees are listed below:

- Cancellation more than 30 days before the departure date: 15% of the travel price.

- Cancellation between 30 and 15 days before the departure date: 25% of the travel price.

- Cancellation between 14 and 5 days before the departure date: 50% of the travel price.

- Cancellation between 4 and 1 day before the departure date: 80% of the travel price.

- Cancellation less than 24 hours before the departure date or no-show: 100% of the travel price.
